The study analyses the pattern, benefits and trends related to employees tenure working for MNC R&D centers in India and makes some interesting observations.

The released study highlights that more than 60% of executives at a level of Director and above have had only four or less company changes during their entire career, which directly implies that spending longer time at R&D center’s is key . This was further substantiated by the disclosure that the average number of years to reach a Director or above level for individuals, who have worked with one organization, was 2.6 years less than employees who moved frequently.

According to the report, in addition to faster growth in the career ladder, longer tenure gave executives well-rounded exposure in their chosen technical domain and provided them opportunities to understand multiple job functions. The study goes on to site numerous examples and demonstrates how senior executives at various leading MNC R&D Centres have risen in the ranks by staying committed to their jobs and gaining the right exposure within their organizations.

Commenting on the study, Chandramouli CS, Director-Advisory Services, Zinnov, said, “Our study may be in contrast to the current trend of job hopping. We have seen that MNC R&D centres in India offer good growth opportunities to employees who have spent a longer time within the system due to the kind of exposure the sector offers. However, to sustain this, companies will have to address the popular notion among employees about quality of work provided from headquarters to India and devise more strategies to boost their morale.”

Covering a database of 520 executives (with minimum seven years work experience) from software, semiconductor, engineering services and consumer electronics domain, the study also observed that a higher proportion of executives who are at Director and above levels were degree holders from universities outside India, or leading Tier I and Tier II institutes from India. More than 65% of the executives surveyed were Master Degree holders, reiterating the fact that higher education and choice of a good university played a key role in shaping ones career.
