Dell forays into Networking with strategic acquisition of Data Center Networking Leader Force10 Networks

    ·         Force10 R&D team in Chennai to be ramped up significantly over 12 months
    ·         Unveils differentiated Networking Strategy—“Virtual Network Services Infrastructure”—to meet the needs of next-generation data centers
Mumbai, India, September 13, 2011 – As Dell finalized its acquisition of Force10 Networks, a leader in high-performance data center networking, it announced that Force10 Networks’ Chennai R&D team will be significantly ramped up over the next 12 months to play a critical part for Dell’s networking business.  Force10’s industry-leading products and technology will greatly complement Dell’s existing Enterprise data center solutions.
With about 265 engineers, Force10’s Chennai Innovation Center is the global center of competence for leading-edge core/switch product development, including software development and testing, for Force10’s multiple product lines and multi-protocol label switching (MPLS). Some of the most recent Force10 products (such as TOR4810 solution for low latency & 10G aggregation & Z9000 distributed core solution) were all developed at the Chennai Center.
The Force10 acquisition is Dell’s latest investment to broaden its networking portfolio to deliver its Virtual Network Services Infrastructure. Dell expects the transaction to be accretive to earnings in the second half of next year. Dell expects to hire several hundred new team members in engineering, sales and marketing, and services jobs at the Dell Silicon Valley as well as Chennai R&D Centers.
Dell has taken significant steps over the past three years to expand its enterprise presence as a complete solutions provider. Dell recognizes that the network infrastructure to deliver applications or information is critical, regardless of location or end point device. Dell sees the data center as the focal point whose network must be transformed into a streamlined, efficient, policy-driven network responsive to changing applications and end-user demands.
Force10 is a global technology leader in data center networking for service provider and enterprise customers. Dell Force10’s technology allows customers to transform network infrastructures into an open, reliable and scalable data center and cloud computing fabric. With the combination of Force10 and Dell’s current PowerConnect portfolio, the company now offers a comprehensive switching strategy for data center, enterprise and campus/branch environments.
As with past acquisitions of Compellent and EqualLogic, Dell is committed to maintaining and growing the existing Force10 channel program. Dell Force10’s customers include leading Web 2.0 and Fortune 100 companies, Internet portals, global carriers, leading research laboratories and government organizations with some of the world’s most demanding network environments.
    Distinguishing Characteristics of Dell Force10
    ·         Flexible, open automation and management for increased infrastructure control and visibility.
    ·         Automated policy configuration and workload mobility for improved operational agility.
    ·         High-performance top-of-rack and data center core networking solutions for next- generation solutions.
Dell believes that data center is the central connecting point for users to access the information they need to run their businesses. Whether the data center architecture is that of a traditional data center or a cloud environment, users now demand access to their data and applications anytime, anywhere. Data center networking is going through a significant transformation to meet the needs of end users, applications, virtualization, and IT administrators. To address this changing market scenario, Dell has developed a differentiated networking strategy. Dell’s Virtual Network Services Infrastructure enables changes, in a data centre network, at the speed of the business. VNSI directly addresses a simpler, more open networking environment, that is easier to view, manage and control, and one that can scale for requirements today and into the future.
    Dell’s Virtual Network Services Infrastructure
    ·         Automation of virtual machine management and movement across data centers regardless of scale while maintaining visibility, security policies and resource efficiency.
    ·         Enable improved manageability to reduce IT resources and deployments by standardizing IT processes while consolidating storage, server and networking infrastructures.
    ·         Deliver a cost effective, flexible and efficient networking infrastructure which instantly responds to evolving application needs for agile, business-driven responsiveness.
“India is playing a strategic part in driving Dell’s transformation globally into a solutions and services enterprise. Chennai is a critical growth engine from three view-points: manufacturing, services and R&D. Dell’s only manufacturing facility in India is in Sriperumbudur. Further to the acquisition of Perot Systems, Chennai is one of the key centers for Dell Services. We now look forward to Force10’s Chennai R&D team bolstering our foray into Networking. We plan to significantly increase engineering headcount at Force10 Chennai over the next one year,” said Suresh Vaswani, Executive Vice President, Dell Services, & Chairman, Dell India.
Networking is a key element in Dell’s data center solutions approach. It’s the logical third component to our industry-leading server and storage portfolios. Force10’s technology is a natural complement to Dell’s existing data center strategy and enables a strong solution alignment with Dell’s server, storage and systems management portfolio. Force10’s Open Cloud Networking based on open standards, automation and virtualization matches Dell’s philosophy to provide open, capable and affordable solutions to help customers capitalize on the Virtual Era,” said Dario Zamarian, Vice President & General Manager, Dell Networking.
